Nicole Caggiano. A non-descript gallery of my work.
This is my thesis as assembled for Ringling’s Senior show. I arranged my 7 cards and the card back example into a sort of flowering grid pattern. I got really positive feedback for the whole altar set-up. Next up are the individual cards themselves, after this foreword:
The Fool’s Delirium
“For my senior thesis, I chose to explore the concept of a personal tarot card deck and all the symbolism and history such illustrations lend themselves to. My deck is called “The Book of Mirage.” The name was revealed to me in a dream, but is otherwise a deck of personal interpretation. What I’m presenting here are 7 cards from the major arcana, as well as the card back design. These cards include famous tropes such as the Fool, Hanged Man, and Death. I was surprised and delighted to see that this type of work actually has a strong contemporary New Age market, and to me this project was a successful way to blend fine art and more commercially based work. The depth of my research and consideration of what elements to include in each picture was an extremely fulfilling experience, and I fully intend to complete the deck as soon as possible.
The project also allowed me to discover and sustain an effective rendering approach and a decidedly more linear style. My inspiration for this series includes woodblock prints, illuminated manuscripts to a certain degree, and ultimately, modern pen & ink illustrations splashed with digital color. With regards to the project’s title, I’m sequencing the cards to take an abridged version of the Fool’s journey; this joyous simpleton finds enlightenment through a series of trial and errors, ending up lofted in a cocoon where he receives hidden knowledge and perception-not before becoming delirious from all of the stimuli found along his path.
